“They (Serbia) are a strong team, we had to face a lot of difficulties. So I think it was good for us to play like this and defend the penalty area when we were under pressure. It was important for the team.
“I was happy with a lot of the play, especially in the first half. We played very well with the ball. But in the second half we didn’t keep the ball as well as we wanted. But it was important to win and start like this.
“Serbia had to attack because they needed goals. We also had a great chance (Harry Kane’s header was saved by the goalkeeper) but I am pleased we showed recovery.
“Serbia’s system still makes it difficult for us to create chances. We had to be patient and show our quality at the right time. We defended well as a team, lost some energy. But I’m not surprised because it’s been a while since the players played the full 90 minutes. We can show more efficiency.”Southgate
